Empowering Regional Agriculture with Hydrogen Innovation: Highlights from the 'Renewables in Ag' Event

HydGene’s CEO, Louise, was a recent panelist at the 2024 National Renewables in Ag Conference held in Toowoomba on July 4. The event brought together industry leaders from the agricultural, government and technology sectors to explore the role of bioenergy, including hydrogen, in Australia's renewable future.

During the panel, Louise discussed HydGene’s recent progress in converting agricultural residues into green hydrogen for ammonia production. She highlighted the potential for deployment of modular hydrogen production units in regional areas, and emphasised how these solutions can empower farmers to transform ag-residues, like straw stubble, into valuable chemical products.

“The goal is to decentralise hydrogen production, providing opportunities for farmers by creating more sustainable fertiliser options right at the source,” Louise said.

HydGene’s partnership with Tait Pastoral Company for an upcoming field pilot was also discussed, demonstrating HydGene's commitment to bringing scalable, renewable solutions directly to the agricultural sector. The pilot program, targeted to begin next year, will test HydGene’s innovative biocatalyst technology on-site, using biomass to produce hydrogen for green ammonia.

The panel also featured insights from fellow panellists Bernadette McCabe, Mark Wallace, and Travis McNeill, who shared their experiences and case studies of successful biogas and renewable energy projects in agriculture.
