We convert biomass waste into green hydrogen on-site and on-demand using an engineered biocatalyst.
Using Synthetic biology we have engineered a next generation biocatalyst that is able to convert carbohydrates extracted from biomass into hydrogen at unprecedented rates and yields. Our biocatalyst is extremely robust and tolerant to compounds that are typically toxic to microorganisms. Our biocatalyst is first produced using traditional fermentation processes and then packaged into a flow-based cartridge that allows us to produce hydrogen continuously for months!
Our second most unique feature is that we make the hydrogen only when and where it is needed. We regulate the rate and amount of hydrogen that is made through an automated and feedback-controlled process. This eliminates any unnecessary and dangerous build-up of hydrogen and overcomes the uneconomical problem of storing hydrogen. The footprint of our technology is smaller than a solar or wind farm per energy produced and can be readily deployed on site for the end user and eliminate the need to transport hydrogen - which is another huge cost saver.
We maximise the use of energy that is stored in the biomass waste and minimise costs through optimising efficiency of the whole process. Our projections show that we can produce hydrogen cost-competitively with hydrogen made from fossil fuels and electrolysis. In fact, since we eliminate storage and transport of hydrogen, our levelised costs of hydrogen will be cheaper for the end-user than any other existing hydrogen technology.
The core technology, the biocatalyst, is contained in a cartridge system that can be replaced once it looses efficacy. Like replacing the CO2 cylinder in your soda stream. The cartridges can be stacked to meet various hydrogen demand and scale. The whole biomass to hydrogen process is modular and can be adapted to various feedstock sources.
Compared to thermo‐chemical syngas production methods like gasification or pyrolysis, our hydrogen from biomass is free of toxic contaminants and impurities. It can be coupled directly to a hydrogen fuel cell to produce electricity.
Our engineered bio-catalyst can be optimised to use a wide variety of biomass feedstocks including designated energy crops and biomass waste sources.
